Prevention efforts help parents develop their parenting skills, understand and meet their child's emotional, physical and developmental needs. For over ten years, Tip of Texas Family Outreach has been committed to preventing child abuse and neglect in our community, through prevention programs and supportive services.
Reported child abuse quadrupled in Texas in recent years. Parenting is a complicated, demanding job. Very few paraents have had any training on how to do it. But abuse will continue to increase as long as unreveiled stressors affect families. Child abuse occurs most often in families where parents are caught in stressful life situations beyond thier control. Illness, job loss, alcohol, lasck of resources and drug abuse are only a few of the events that cause parents to feel isolated and unable to solve their problems. Coping skills are short-circuited. This is when child abuse or neglect is more likely to occur.

MORE ABOUT OUR SERVICES
The In-Home Casework Services Program provides families with a caseworker to visit with them weekly and/or biweekly. This caseworker will provide support services to the family, education on parenting their children and assistance with making referrals to other agencies for further services.
Parenting Classes are offered in English and Spanish both in the daytime and evening hours. TOTFO uses the Active Parenting Curriculum where 6 sessions are delivered and taught over topics such as "Positive Discipline, Mutual Respect, Avoiding Power Struggles" etc. Classes are even specialized depending on the age of the children the client has. Refer down to schedule for more details and times offered.
Youth Program. Family Outreach has become a certified Safe Sitter® site. This program is designed to teach 11 - 13 year olds the skills in caring for young children. It will teach them the basics of babysitting as a business, ethics in babysitting, prevent injury to a child, how to help a choking child or infant, behavior management of a child etc. The fee for this class is $55.00. It includes a Safe Sitter Kit for each child to bring home. Call 541-5566 for the next available class.
SAFE SITTER PROGRAM
Safe Sitter® is a program that teaches boys and girls ages 11 to 14 how to handle emergencies when caring for children. This class teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies.
When you accept a babysitting job, you accept the responsibility for a child’s life. Taking a Safe Sitter® class will help prepare you to be a more responsible babysitter.
